| Network and Operating System Requirements |
|
CosmetiSoft is comprised of two basic parts. The workstation PC, under the Microsoft Windows operating system, runs our software to display and manipulate the data, and the server, running the Network software (most commonly Microsoft Server 2000, 2003, etc) runs the network operating system software, which manages file access request for read/write operations, received from the workstation PC's.
A CosmetiSoft workstation runs under Windows. It will run under Windows NT, XP or 2000. All workstations should be using the same Operating System (OS) version. We prefer that you use Windows XP Pro or 2000 (or the most recent Windows Server 2003) as we have found it to be the most reliable and stable form of Windows network operating systems.
CosmetiSoft's dedicated server can run on Windows (NT, 2000, XP or Server 2003), Novell or Linux. We have had very good experience with Novell, which is an extremely stable platform, with good performance. Today, Windows is the OS of choice and for network operating systems, Windows Server 2000 or 2003 are preferable due to their track records for stability and performance.
Regardless of how your particular office runs CosmetiSoft, it is imperative that any practice using a computer network has a local consultant that they can rely on to keep their computers and network running efficiently. Though there are minimum workstation and server configuration requirements, we have found that as long as you already have a stable networking environment with up-to-date network and PC software, CosmetiSoft will run well.
We strongly recommend you to use a wired network. As these are more reliable and secure than wireless platforms. If you plan on running any kind of wireless network please talk with us first. We have found that interference from cordless phones and other sources can cause connectivity problems. Such interference with the communications between the workstation PC and the server may cause poor performance, lockups and potentially the loss of critical data. It is essential that wireless signals be excellent at every point that a workstation running CosmetiSoft is used.
We do not charge extra for running a remote office and many doctors take advantage of this to run CosmetiSoft workstations from home or satellite offices. You cannot use CosmetiSoft across the internet directly or via VPN. The bandwidth requirements are too high and the application is loaded initially from the server. The only way you can access CosmetiSoft is to use a remote desktop application such as PC anywhere, GOTOMYPC, VNC or Remote Desktop. These access one of your workstations at your main location and just send the screen information to the remote machine. The best solution is using Windows Terminal Services. This allows multiple workstations to log onto your server across the internet. Talk to your local IT consultant on how exactly to install and configure terminal server. |
